AEO — Answer Engine Optimization

Ranking first is worth nothing if the answer never lists anyone. AEO is about being the thing it quotes.

Quick answer

Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your content so that an AI answering a question quotes you as the source. It covers the way answers are written on the page, the structured data behind them, the factual precision the model needs to trust you, and the technical work that lets an AI crawler read your site at all.

Traditional SEO wins a position in a list. AEO wins a mention in an answer where there may be no list.

The change

The list is collapsing.

For twenty-five years the goal was position one on a page of ten links. That page still exists, but a growing share of questions now get answered before anyone sees it — by an assistant that has read the sources, synthesised them, and produced one paragraph with two or three names in it.

If you are not one of those names, your ranking is irrelevant. Not diminished — irrelevant, because the page you rank on was never displayed.

AEO is the discipline of being one of the names. It has real overlap with good SEO, but the target is different, and some of the things that win rankings actively work against being quoted.

What the work is

Concrete, unglamorous, and it works.

Answer-shaped writing

Questions as headings, and the answer in the first two sentences beneath them. Models extract passages, so a page that buries its answer in paragraph six does not get quoted from paragraph six — it does not get quoted.

Structured data

Schema that states what you are, where, what you offer and what you charge — in a form a machine reads without inference. Inference is where a model gets you wrong. We build to the published schema.org vocabulary and validate against Google’s structured-data documentation.

Specific, checkable facts

Numbers, dates, ranges and named specifics. Precision is one of the strongest signals that a source is worth citing; vagueness is the fastest way to be skipped.

Crawlable without JavaScript

Most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript. If your content is rendered client-side, a large share of them see an empty page. This alone disqualifies a lot of modern sites.

Off-site consistency

Your facts have to agree everywhere a model might find them. Conflicting hours or addresses across directories do not just confuse customers — they lower the confidence a model has in citing you at all.

Nothing fabricated

We will not invent a rating, a review count, an award or a statistic to strengthen a page. It is a Google manual-action risk, it is dishonest, and models are increasingly good at catching it.

AEO, GEO and SEO

Three related things people keep merging.

What it optimises forThe win condition
SEOPosition in a ranked list of linksYou are number one on the page
AEOBeing quoted as a source in an answerThe answer cites you
GEOHow models describe you across all answersThe description is accurate and favourable

They are complementary, not competing — and the technical foundation overlaps heavily. But you can rank first and never be cited, and you can be cited constantly while described badly. Those are different problems with different fixes.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

Is AEO just SEO with a new name?

There is real overlap in the technical foundation, so anyone telling you it is a completely separate discipline is overselling. But the target genuinely differs: SEO optimises for a position in a list, AEO optimises for being extracted and quoted. The writing structure that wins the second is not the writing structure that historically won the first.

How do I know if it is working?

By asking. We test a defined set of real customer questions across the major assistants on a schedule and record whether you appear, how you are described, and who appears instead of you. It is less precise than a rank tracker and considerably more honest than pretending we cannot measure it.

How long does it take?

Weeks to months, and it varies by how established your business already is in the sources models learn from. It is not fast. It is durable, which is the trade.

Does this work if my site is built on Wix or Squarespace?

Usually yes, with more constraints. The main risks are JavaScript-rendered content and limited control over structured data. We will audit it and tell you honestly whether the platform is the bottleneck.

How long have you been doing this?

Since 2001. My Local Everything is merging with 1 On 1 Internet Marketing, founded that year, which has served more than 17,000 clients and affiliates across 25 years of local marketing.
